The Courses

26 Feb, 2018

Hi everyone,

Weeks are passing by but we are grateful that the boys are now well adapted (Siméon goes to school with pleasure!). Ride with bikes, afternoon at a hut or around the bonfire are highlights of our outside life here! Gabriel is visibly growing. He is coming to class with us, sleeps and from time to time, start to talk almost as much as the teacher!

Useful courses?

We first want to tell you that everything that we are learning here is exactly what we aspire to. To approach another culture, and to learn to appreciate it, is a real challenge. However, We are realizing that our deep motivations are growing and that we are feeling more equipped for our future work in Liberia (See the structure of the courses below). We have the chance to have a lot of former missionaries that share with us real examples from their works on the field. For example, a Nepalese woman, after having taken part in a project to move people out of poverty said:

Before, when people came to the house I pulled my scarf over my face and if asked if there was anyone under the scarf I would say – “ No there is no-one inside”. I did not count myself as a person. But now, if people come to the house I say ‘Namaste’ and ask them to sit down and talk.
structure

This example show us how crucial the question of identity is and how linked it is to poverty. The words of this woman are touching!

Third culture kids?

Finally, we want to share with you this small poem (Colors) which illustrates very well why Théotime, Siméon and Gabriel will become what we call here "TCK". That is to say, "Third Culture Kids". Enjoy the reading.

“Colors” by Whitni Thomas

I grew up in a Yellow country
But my parents are Blue.
I’m Blue.
Or at least, that is what they told me.
But I play with the Yellows.
I went to school with the Yellows.
I spoke the Yellow language.
I even dressed and appeared to be Yellow.
Then I moved to the Blue land.
Now I go to school with the Blues.
I speak the Blue language.
I even dress and look Blue.
But deep down, inside me, something’s Yellow.
I love the Blue country.
But my ways are tinted with Yellow.
When I am in the Blue land,
I want to be Yellow.
When I am in the Yellow land,
I want to be Blue.
Why can’t I be both?
A place where I can be me.
A place where I can be green.

Best wishes

Melvina, Nicolas, Théotime, Siméon and Gabriel.
